Grandpa the Farmer

Farmer Friday

“So God Made a Farmer" was a speech given by radio broadcaster Paul Harvey at the 1978 Future Farmers of America. The speech has been borrowed, in part or whole, a few different times since.

When I hear or read the speech I cry; and I mean I ugly cry every time. The speech reminds me of my grandpa, who most notably was one of the many hard working men I have met over my lifetime.

Here is how I think of and honor him:

It had to be somebody who would plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard weeks work with a five mile drive to church. Somebody who would bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing...So, God made a farmer.

Find your people, cherish your people and love your people!
