Immersion

One of the more interesting aspects of searching for my biological parents was the immersion of me into the social media culture for DNA analysis.

When I was working to determine my Ancestry DNA results, my lens was like a laser beam. All the focus was on finding groups of people who could make sense of the information. So I did what any modern day humanoid would do, I went to the Internet.

Yes, I Googled how to interpret Ancestry DNA results to determine parentage. Which turned out to be an overwhelming volume of hits.

After parsing through the list, reading articles, checking out decision tools and joining a few online groups, I was able to break the code. I found my parentage. More specifically I had the name of the maternal family.

For a searching adoptee finding a name is priceless gift. One found by diligently using a few of these items:

  • The CeCe Moore Facebook Group - DNA Detectives

  • Family Tree Magazine - Cousinhood Chart

  • Family Tree Podcast - to better understand genealogy

  • DNA Painter - Centimorgan Chart to understand DNA relationships

  • The Leeds Method - DNA Color Clustering

Thankful to this day for those first steps and the immersive experience. If you are searching for your parentage using a commercial DNA, consider using any of the above tools as a method of resolution.

Find your people, cherish your people and love your people!
